While “No Time to Die” still hasn’t hit cinemas yet, the franchise’s star Daniel Craig has already left the role of James Bond and moved onto other things.
With his exit, the franchise now stands at something of a crossroads – especially with Bond’s co-owner MGM in the midst of being bought by Amazon. Where the franchise goes from here is anybody’s guess.
Speaking to Total Film recently though, producer Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are reluctant to discuss the future until “No Time to Die” has had its time in the sun. Broccoli says:
“It’s tough to think about the future until this film has its moment. I think we just really want to celebrate this and celebrate Daniel, and then when the dust settles, then look at the landscape and figure out what the future is. Although I think one thing we’ve certainly learned in the last 18 months is you never know what the future is. So we have to sit down and think about it.”
One thing they don’t have to think about is whether or not the future includes TV series. That’s a big no from Broccoli and Wilson with her saying: “We make films. We make films for the cinema. That’s what we do.” He then adds: “We’ve resisted that call for 60 years.”
One person who will happily help the pair out is Martin Campbell. The filmmaker helped launch Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig’s tenures with “Goldeneye” and “Casino Royale” respectively – delivering two of the best films in the franchise in the process.
Out doing promotional rounds for “The Protege” this week,” Campbell was asked by Collider if he would consider returning to direct the next film. He seems keen and obviously gets along well with the producers:
“Oh yeah, I would certainly consider it. I enjoy doing Bond. And also, the two producers are great to work with. You’re pretty much given a free hand to – everybody obviously participates in the script, and Casino I had Paul Haggis who did a terrific job with the script. He did the final draft.
But the two producers are great to work with, and they don’t interfere at all if they think you’re on the right track, and everything else they just let you get on with it. They support you all the way. It’s an enjoyable experience.”
“No Time To Die” is currently slated to hit cinemas on October 8th.
