“Insecure” star Issa Rae and J.J. Abrams are set to executive produce “Fledgling,” a sci-fi series adaptation of the late Octavia Butler’s 2005 novel in the works for HBO.

The novel is set in a world where vampires and humans co-exist in symbiotic relationships. Shori appears to be a child but has no memory of where she came from when she wakes in a cave one day.

Her need to feed becomes overwhelming, and she soon discovers that she is actually a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire who must figure out everything she can about her life in order to save herself and those she loves most.

Multiple drafts of sequels to the standalone novel were written but not published with future seasons potentially adapting from that.

“Lovecraft Country” writers and co-executive producers Sonya Winton-Odamtten and Jonathan I. Kidd are set to pen the pilot for an adaptation which would mark the third Octavia Butler work to score a screen adaptation in development.

FX is working on a TV series take on her 1979 novel “Kindred” with “Zola” director Janicza Bravo set to helm. In addition, A24 is adapting “Parable of the Sower” with Garrett Bradley (“Time”) set to direct.
