Aside from the “What If” series next month, the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” movie.

Boasting the first Asian superhero to join the MCU, Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton assembled a largely Asian cast for the feature which stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh.

Yeoh is currently out doing press for her Netflix feature “Gunpowder Milkshake” and spoke to Collider about her role as Jiang Li in “Shang-Chi”. In the process she revealed how her character fits into the story:

“We are so happy that we are having our first Asian superhero. And not just superhero but superheroines around him as well, and I am a guardian of a mythical city. These young people come in and they have to learn how to protect history, and to protect not just this world but the worlds that are around us from the demons that are locked away. So it’s magic, it’s reality, so many things happening and it’s a lot of fun.”

The Marvel synopsis has made no reference to a mythical city, though the trailers have shown off some mythical creatures and battles.

Intriguingly fan speculation has arisen that the city she’s referring to is K’un-Lun – the lost city that is also a key part of “Iron Fist” (with Finn Jones’ Danny Rand its “protector”). To date, Marvel Studios has refrained from referencing any of their Marvel Netflix shows, even as rumors swirl of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock possibly popping up in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” opens in cinemas on September 3rd.
