Twenty years ago, The CW’s Superman prequel series “Smallville” launched with Tom Welling playing Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor.
Running from 2001-2011 and encompassing 217 episodes across ten seasons, it ultimately paved the way for other DC shows to follow with Greg Berlanti’s “Arrow” kicking off shortly after and launching the wave of WBTV produced DC series we have today.
“Smallville” also famously didn’t actually include Kent becoming Superman until the last few minutes of the final episode and even then famously never showed him in full costume. As a result, we never really got to see Welling in action as Supes.
Today, CBR has linked to a Cameo video on Twitter showing Welling saying that he and Rosenbaum are working on an animated series to bring the show’s characters back to life with the plan to use as many of the original cast members as possible.
One likely no show will be Allison Mack who played Clark’s friend Chloe on the show. Mack was involved in the NXIVM sex cult, was arrested for racketeering in 2018 and is being sentenced next week – potentially facing a minimum of 15 years in prison.
Warner Bros. TV produced the series and should the guys be given the go-ahead to develop the project it could end up on HBO Max.
