BBC Two and See-Saw Films have released the first photos from its big-budget, long in the works period drama series “The North Water”.
The photos show Colin Farrell as Henry Drax, Jack O’Connell as Patrick Sumner, Stephen Graham as Captain Brownlee and Tom Courtenay as Baxter all in character. Peter Mullan, Sam Spruell and Roland Møller also star in the series which hails from celebrated “45 Years” and “Weekend” director Andrew Haigh.
Based on the Man Booker Prize long-listed novel by Ian McGuire, the five-part series tells the story of Patrick Sumner (O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic in the late 1850s.
The ferocity of the elements, however, is matched by the violence of his crewmates like Drax (Farrell), a harpooner and a brutal force of nature. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, a confrontation between the two men erupts – taking them on a journey far beyond the safe moorings of civilization.
Filming began in 2019 north of the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic, the production team going as far as 81 degrees north for sequences set on pack ice – one of the furthest points north a drama series has ever filmed before.
Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman executive produce. In the U.S., the series will premiere on Thursday July 15th via AMC+.
