AMC Studios and See-Saw Films are teaming up for “Firebrite,” a new original series blending vampire mythology and Australia’s dark colonialist heritage.
The story unfolds in a remote desert mining town and the base of a vampire stronghold imported from Britain to Australia in 1788 by the colonial superpower who aimed to use the creatures to eradicate the indigenous population. The action follows two Indigenous Australian hunters, Tyson and Shanika, on their quest to battle the last colony of vampires.
The project hails from celebrated filmmakers Warwick Thornton (“Sweet Country,” “Samson and Delilah”) and Brendan Fletcher (“Mad Bastards,” “We Don’t Need a Map”) serve as writers, directors, and executive producers on the series. Rachel Gardner, Emile Sherman and Iain Canning also executive produce.
Eight one-hour episodes will be filmed in South Australia this Summer around two key locations. One being the Coober Pedy region, which is the traditional Country of the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara people of the Western Desert. The other at Adelaide Studios and areas around that city, the lands of the Kaurna People of the Adelaide Plains.
AMC Studios and See-Saw previously partnered on series “State of the Union” and “Top of the Lake”. In the United States, the series will debut exclusively on AMC+.
