It doesn’t hit the United States until Wednesday, but “Godzilla vs. Kong” opened internationally this past Thursday and the box-office responded to having a real tentpole film back in cinemas at long last.
In China alone, the movie pulled in a $70 million debut – the biggest premiere for a foreign title in both 2020 and 2021, and an 82% market share. That’s well above its nearest rival “Tenet” which debuted to $30 million in August last year.
Globally the film snagged $121.8 million from 38 global markets, and topped in all markets where it released. In Australia alone, the movie in its opening weekend outgrossed the entire local gross total of the previous entry “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”.
On IMAX, the film generated $12.4 million globally – making it Hollywood’s biggest IMAX weekend since December 2019. “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” also opened in Australia to a solid start. The re-release of “Avatar” in China continues going strong, the film pulling in over $44 million by Sunday night after ten days.
Domestically, the Bob Odenkirk-led revenge thriller feature “Nobody” kicked off in the top spot with $6.7 million, while taking in another $5 million overseas.
