The Consumer Technology Association has projected that approximately $112 billion will be spent on the creation of streaming programming across the various services in 2021.
The estimate comes from a presentation as a part of CES this week and published at THR about the high levels of spending on streaming – an area becoming the dominant form of non-gaming entertainment consumption in modern times.
The $112 billion spend is an 11% increase over last year and a 31% increase over 2019. That amount covers the various services from majors like Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ to smaller ones like Apple TV+, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, CBS All Access, Showtime, Starz and so forth.
Streaming services are also one of the biggest drivers, alongside 5G connectivity and digital health devices, of technology industry sector sales which are expected to climb to $461 billion in the U.S. in 2021. 5G-supported smartphones and a recent surge in people upgrading their home TVs are expected to be big sellers in 2021.
