Disney-owned 20th Century Studios have announced two key changes to their theatrical release slate with both Shawn Levy’s action-comedy “Free Guy” and Kenneth Branagh’s murder mystery “Death on the Nile” delayed.
Several months ago both films were delayed from their original July and October releases to openings on December 11th and 18th respectively. Now both have been pulled from 2020 altogether and do not have new dates set as yet.
The delays mean Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” opening Christmas Day is the sole live-action tentpole on the 2020 calendar and that title is expected to shift in the coming weeks.
If it does, that means Universal’s “Freaky” and the animated “Croods: The New Age” this month are the only studio films left on the docket, and the reason they’re still going ahead is due to Universal’s historic deal with AMC Theatres allowing them to shorten the theatrical window and make both films available early on PVOD with both likely to hit iTunes, Amazon, etc. before year’s end.
