“Mulan” Has Made At Least $260 Million?

Disney Pictures’ big gamble of releasing “Mulan” directly via a one-time ‘Premier Access’ $30 charge on the Disney+ streaming platform appears to have paid off.

Yahoo reports that according to figures provided by analytics research firm 7Park Data, nearly 29% of the U.S. households that subscribe to Disney+ took the company up on its $30 charge in its first week – far surpassing other popular (and free) titles on the platform.

Disney has amassed over 60 million global subscribers with at least half that said to be U.S. households. Working with those numbers, the site suggests roughly nine million users purchased “Mulan” for $29.99 which means “net profits would pile up to $261 million – and that’s on the conservative side.”

Unlike a traditional theatrical release where box office revenue is normally split with theater chains, or even a regular PVOD release with a commission taken by Apple or Google, Disney will retain 100% of the profits.

A $260M haul would put the film well ahead of “Tenet” which after two weeks in cinemas has only just cleared the $200 million mark globally and just $30 million domestically. “Mulan” opened in some international markets where it underwhelmed with just $37 million from those markets.

Disney has not yet provided any official numbers when it comes to the performance of “Mulan,” while obvious questions are there regarding 7Park’s data collection methodology.
