Lussier Talks “Terminator Genisys” Sequel Story

2015’s “Terminator: Genisys” hoped to lead a new incarnation of the franchise, a soft reboot that served as a potential new trilogy launcher.

Instead it proved a disappointment. Critical and audience reviews were poor, though box-office wise it was saved internationally with global audiences (especially China) pushing it to $440.6 million in box-office – very good, but not great considering the film’s costly $155 million budget.

The Alan Taylor-directed film did lay some groundwork for future installments and now the film’s co-writer Patrick Lussier offered an interview to The Production Meeting Podcast and revealed where he was planning to take the sequels that were never made:

“We wrote like two drafts of the next one, the direct sequel, and had an outline for the third one, what that would be, that answered all the questions that were presented in ‘Genisys’ and brought it back around and closed it all off.

They dealt more with how the future and where Skynet comes from and what that sort of time loop is. You know, the Matt Smith character. It became much more of a focus, so they were probably a little trippier and stood away from ‘T2’ a little more. Started having their own identity.

There’s sort of an interesting escaping the fatalistic part of it, how it opened was very cool… who knows? Maybe one day they’ll release it as a comic or something.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Byung Hun Lee and Matt Smith all co-starred in the film which was the fifth overall in the series. Last year’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” however effectively wiped out all the continuity of ‘Genisys’.
