R.I.P. Lynn Shelton

Indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton has died at the age of 54. Shelton passed away unexpectedly yesterday from a previously unidentified blood disorder.

Comedian and actor Marc Maron, her frequent creative collaborator and recent romantic partner, made a statement to IndieWire confirming the news. Shelton reportedly collapsed yesterday morning after a week of illness tied to a previously unknown condition (not COVID-19). Doctors tried hard to save her but could not.

Shelton helped spearhead the ‘mumblecore’ movement with ultra low-budget, dialogue-centric dramas about relationships of people of in their 20s and 30s and featuring naturalistic acting and dialogue. Her feature directorial efforts included “Humpday,” “Your Sister’s Sister,” “Laggies” and “We Go Way Back”. She also appeared as an actor in several films, notably “Safety Not Guaranteed”.

In recent years she made a name for herself as a TV director, helming episodes of shows like “GLOW,” “Master of None,” “Mad Men,” “Shameless,” “A.P. Bio,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” “The Morning Show” and most recently “Little Fires Everywhere”.

Our sincerest condolences go out to her friends and family during this time.
