True enjoyment of a mystery film or series is about letting it unfold at its own pace, savouring the journey and the eventual reveal and basking in its atmosphere.
To some, however, a mystery is a puzzle to be solved as fast as possible – putting together the clues and wildly speculating multiple theories which usually turn out right because there generally is only a handful of options and one is likely to be correct.
For those people, “Knives Out” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” filmmaker Rian Johnson is letting you in on a little secret – look at the phones of the suspects. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Johnson chose to share a secret and admits it may damage his future projects:
“I don’t know if I should say this or not, not because it’s lascivious or something but because it’s going to screw me on the new mystery movie that I write. But forget it, I’ll say it. It’s very interesting.
Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but – and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie – bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.
Oh no! Every single filmmaker that has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now.”
Johnson isn’t kidding – many companies allow films and TV shows to use their products on screen, but Apple seemingly has stricter rules as to which characters are actually allowed to use its products.
This would also fit in with reports about the various Apple TV+ original series which had very strict rules about the use of Apple products. So next time you see a film remember – Android user? They might be a bad guy.
