Back when Paramount launched a writer’s room for the “Transformers” franchise, the plan was to expand the property with spin-offs including “Bumblebee” and an animated feature set on the Transformers homeworld of Cybertron. That project got as far as Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari reportedly submitting a screenplay.
While “Bumblebee” was made and just released this past weekend, there’s been zero movement on the animated feature. Now, Metro spoke with series producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura this week and he confirms the project is still very much in the works: “We actually have an animated movie in the works that will tell the whole Cybertron mythology. The fans will love that.”
Another project that was teased at one point was an Optimus Prime solo film, but in regards to that one di Bonaventura was far less enthusiastic: “We’re trying to figure out an Optimus Prime solo movie. It will be hard with Optimus, he is always right, very stoic and is a man of few words … It is kind of like saying, ‘Lets do a movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi?’ But how much is there to say about Obi-Wan? It is not so easy.”
“Bumblebee” opened this past weekend to a franchise low of $21 million but a critical review high for the series.
