20th Century Fox has announced that production has officially wrapped on Steven Spielberg’s new film adaptation of the classic musical “West Side Story”. Shooting finished up at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn Navy Yards in New York a few days ago.
The story explores young love and tensions between rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks on the streets of 1957 New York. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler star in the film alongside Ariana DeBose, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, Curtiss Cook and Rita Moreno.
Spielberg produces and directs from a script by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner. Spielberg penned a letter about the production which you can read an excerpt from below:
“This has been a journey without precedent: AA joyful stunningly moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world’s greatest musicals. My brilliantly talented, fiercely committed, generous and apparently inexhaustible cast and crew of hundreds have given our film everything they’ve got, and already I can say that the film we’ll be releasing December 2020 owes everything to them as does its immensely grateful director.”
“West Side Story” will be released by Disney Studios in the United States on December 18th 2020.
It’s a wrap on West Side Story. To mark the end of production, Steven wanted to share a few thoughts and images with you.
