Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “McFarland, USA”) is set to direct Disney’s live-action take on their 1998 animated feature “Mulan”.
Caro will be the second woman at Disney to direct a movie budgeted at over $100 million following Ava DuVernay’s upcoming “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation.
Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner are producing the project which the studio says aims to be very culturally authentic. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the recent draft of the script.
Caro’s hiring also likely takes her out of the running for Captain Marvel” for which she made the shortlist last year. Her newest film, “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” opens in cinemas later this Spring.
Alex Graves is helming a rival “Mulan” project in development at Sony Pictures.
