Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin (“Aquaman,” “Power Rangers”) is currently in negotiations to play the lead role of Liu Kang in the “Mortal Kombat” reboot at New Line Cinema.
One of the seven original characters introduced in the first “Mortal Kombat” game and the main character of the previous films in 1995 and 1997 (played by Robin Shou), Liu Kang is a Shaolin monk with high flying kicks who fights in a tournament to save the Earth. Story specifics of the new film are unknown.
James Wan is producing the project which has Simon McQuoid and will begin shooting in Adelaide, Australia later this year. It’ll be familiar territory for Lin who was born in China, raised and educated in Australia and is now a Canadian citizen.
Lin most recently appeared in the “Black Mirror” episode ‘Striking Vipers’ as a fighter within a world inspired by Kombat-esque games. The new “Mortal Kombat” is targeting a March 2021 release.
