As part of a Facebook livestream, actor/producer Vin Diesel has revealed that two key players in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise are returning to the fold for the upcoming ninth movie.
His video says that original cast member Jordana Brewster, who was last seen in “Furious 7,” is coming back to reprise her role of Dominic Toretto’s sister Mia. How she will be incorporated back into a series without including the late Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor is unclear.
Additionally, filmmaker Justin Lin is returning to the director’s chair – and Diesel confirms that Lin is the one who insisted that Brewster return. Lin helmed four films in the series, from the third through to the sixth, including the most acclaimed entry in the series – “Fast Five”.
Since departing the franchise four years ago, Lin has helmed “Star Trek Beyond” along with numerous episodes of TV series like “True Detective,” “Scorpion” and “S.W.A.T.”. He remains attached to numerous projects including a “Hot Wheels” movie, a “Bourne Legacy” sequel, and “Space Jam 2”.
The announcements come amidst clashing and fracturing of the ‘Furious’ family due to the upcoming spin-off featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s characters. Diesel says the plan is to return to basics for the closing installments of the saga (the series plans to end with the tenth film) which reached ridiculously bombastic heights with this year’s eighth chapter.
