Disney’s Live-Action “Mulan” Set For 2018

Disney’s live-action remake of its 1998 classic animated musical hit “Mulan” is being fast-tracked with the studio announcing a November 2nd 2018 release date. Disney has now launched a global casting search for a Chinese actress to play the legendary female heroine in the movie which will be released in 3D.

The story follows the daughter of an aged warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to take her father’s place in the army and go to war. Aided by her trusted dragon, Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and one of the country’s greatest heroines.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Avatar 2,” “Jurassic World”) have also been brought aboard to rewrite Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin’s spec script for the film which the studio bought in 2015.

The plan is for a “more nuanced and elaborate” adaptation of the story which will combine the legendary Chinese ballad and the 1998 animated film. No director is yet attached but Jason Reed, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner will produce.
