“Deadpool” Is 2016’s Most Pirated Film

Following their publication of the most downloaded TV series of 2016, Torrent Freak has now published the list of the most pirated movies of the year on public torrent sites.

Not unsurprisingly, “Deadpool” came out on top in a list dominated by superhero and comic movies. The film’s release in early February understandably gave it an edge with the feature scoring millions of downloads during the months that followed its release.

Other comic book films making the list were “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Captain America Civil War” in second and third place respectively, “X-Men Apocalypse” in fifth and “Suicide Squad” in eighth.

Outside of that genre “Warcraft” was the biggest 2016 release in sixth, followed by “Independence Day: Resurgence” in seventh and “Finding Dory” in ninth. Last year’s holdovers “Star Wars The Force Awakens” and “The Revenant” also popped up in fourth and tenth.

The results reinforce that there’s a high correlation between piracy and box-office sales, the exceptions this year were ‘Resurgence’ which made the list but flopped at the box-office, and “Zootopia” which was a box-office behemoth but didn’t fare that great on torrent networks.
