“World Beyond” To Run Behind “Walking Dead”

World Beyond To Run Behind Walking Dead

In a few months comes “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” the second spin-off series in the AMC franchise and one that is said to explore the first generation of young people living and knowing nothing of the time before the ‘walkers’.

Franchise head and the show’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple spoke with EW this week about the new show and confirms some more details about its connection to the larger TWD universe.

Along with featuring two young female protagonists, Gimple confirms the new series will take place in a time just slightly behind the events of the current season of “The Walking Dead”:

“Technically, [World Beyond is] a little behind. But not much. Not enough for people to notice. It’s very, very close to being simultaneous, but a little bit back, yes. Not in any way that anyone will possibly notice.

We’re going to be discovering this very big aspect to the world that we haven’t yet seen. We’ve seen glimpses of it on the shows with the helicopters and with the soldier that we saw, Isabelle on Fear…In some ways, World Beyond, it’s a big story and yet it’s sort of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to Rick’s Hamlet, meaning the show and the movie touch upon some of the same things, but they’re not really that deeply related.”

Gimple was also asked about the possibility of crossovers with either the original series or “Fear The Walking Dead” and confirms conversations are indeed happening – though nothing has yet been finalised or confirmed:

“Yeah, absolutely. I mean, they do share a universe…We’ve been talking about aspects of next season of World Beyond. There might even be a big aspect of crossover with one of the shows. That’s the other part of it is we have these plans, but we’ve got to execute them.”

Matt Negrete serves as showrunner on the ten-episode first season which premieres sometime in the Spring. The main series “The Walking Dead” returns with the back half of its tenth season on February 23rd.
