Quentin Tarantino’s new stage play, which was previously teased at Sundance this year, is aiming to open in London’s West End in early 2027.
The production will be titled “The Popinjay Cavalier” and is dubbed a swashbuckling comedy with Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment onboard to produce.
Set in 1830s Europe, the project is “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
Last week it was revealed in the tabloids that the project would be “an old-fashioned British farce” in the tradition of “Noises Off” and is an original work not based on any of his films.
“Noises Off” is a 1982 farce which boasts a ‘play within a play’ structure, the story following a group of actors and stagehands as they stage a chaotic production of a sex farce called ‘Nothing On’.
The news comes as Tarantino is in the spotlight in recent days over comments made by Rosanna Arquette for his liberal use of the N-word in his script for 1994’s “Pulp Fiction”. Tarantino responded, saying her public comments showed a “decided lack of class”.
