DuVernay & HBO Max Plan “DMZ” Pilot

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, already developing the “New Gods” film adaptation at Warner Bros. Pictures, has setup a second DC Comics adaptation – this time in the form of a pilot for the upcoming HBO Max streaming service.

DuVernay will direct the pilot for a potential “DMZ” series based on the Vertigo comic by Brian Wood. The comic deals with a second American Civil War in the near future as the remains of the federal government and the secessionist Free State armies hold an uneasy detente.

The comic unfolds in the sparsely populated demilitarized zone of what was once Manhattan. The series version centers on a female medic on the island who is trying day-in and day-out to help keep residents alive while trying to also find her lost son. She soon proves a source of hope in an America that has lost all sense of the idea.

Showrunner and executive producer Roberto Patino (“Westworld”) is writing the pilot script with DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmworks and Warner Bros. Television producing. Filming aims to begin early 2020.
