Following on from the $30 million domestic haul of “The Best Man Holiday” this past weekend, filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee is negotiating a deal with Universal Pictures for a third instalment in the series.
Opening in 1999, “The Best Man” was dubbed a male-centric “Waiting to Exhale” and became a surprise minor success. Reviews were quite good, and the movie grossed $34 million from a $9 million budget.
Fourteen years later, the $17 million-budget sequel managed an A+ CinemaScore from filmgoers, and that incredible opening which was the fifth-largest ever opening for an R-rated romantic comedy.
Lee would write, direct and produce the film with Sean Daniel also in talks to produce. The cast wasn’t optioned for a third film, so re-negotiations are inevitable.
The success of ‘Holiday’ though has made the third film a priority at the studio, so Lee is expected to get to work writing it soon.
