Paramount Pictures has picked up the film rights to Pierce Brown’s best-selling dystopian sci-fi novel series “Red Rising”.
Following his helming of all “The Hunger Games” sequels, filmmaker Francis Lawrence is attached to direct the film adaptation of the first novel.
Additionally writer Justin Rhodes (“Terminator: Dark Fate”), who worked with Lawrence developing the long-gestating video game-to-film adaptation of “Bioshock” at Netflix, will pen the script.
Mixing Roman mythology with sci-fi, the story is set on Mars in a future where society is set up in a color-coded class system, with the superior Golds on top.
The action follows Darrow, a young miner who is a Red, the lowest on the ladder and a people who exist to do hard labor. After seeing his love die and discovering the truth about his existence, Darrow infiltrates the Gold society with an aim to bring it down.
A previous film adaptation was attempted at Universal that fell through. Six books have been published so far with a seventh coming, and the overall saga has sold over six million copies. The title has also been translated into a popular tabletop game.
Lawrence, Francesco Goedhuis and Cameron MacConomy will produce. Lawrence most recently directed last year’s “The Long Walk” and this year’s “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”.
