“Verity” Soars, “Digger” Buried In Previews

The film adaptation of “It Ends with Us” author Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel “Verity” looks set to easily trounce Tom Cruise at the box-office this weekend. Both “Verity” and “Digger” have scored dismal reviews overall, with both titles sitting at just 45/100 on Metacritic.

The big difference is that with the Cruise-led “Digger,” reactions have varied across the spectrum and resulted in a mixed overall score. The Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson-led “Verity,” on the other hand, has reviews all sitting around the same ‘meh’ level.

When it comes to money, “Verity” will be the clear winner as it pulled in $4.5 million in previews last night compared to “Digger,” which nabbed just $1.2 million.

The former is on track for an opening weekend around $35 million, not far off its $40 million budget. “Digger,” on the other hand, which cost at least $125 million (with some putting it much higher), is now looking at a disastrous start below $10 million.

Both titles face both the third weekend of “Resident Evil” and the second weekend of Marvel’s “Avengers Endgame: Encore” re-release. Last week’s “Heart of the Beast,” “Primetime” and “Forgotten Island” are also still hanging in there.

The news comes as another high-profile title, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning,” is also looking at a rough start. That $50 million-budget title opens next week, and numbers are also suggesting a sub-$10 million start – the movie to be easily trounced by the Jessica Chastain-led horror “Other Mommy” which is targeting a $15-25 million start.
