Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” will be coming to the big screen with a wide theatrical release on June 1st 2029.
The project marks the first feature film for the franchise and is based on author George R.R. Martin‘s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy book series, which served as the basis for HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series and its subsequent spin-offs.
Beau Willimon (“Andor,” “House of Cards”) penned the script for the feature while Owen Harris (“Black Mirror,” “Mrs. Davis”) directs, and the film takes place before the events of “House of the Dragon”.
The story follows Aegon Targaryen’s bloody, brutal conquest of Westeros with his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. In just two years, he successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms, with only Dorne able to successfully resist.
Word on the project first emerged in 2024 when “The Batman Part II” scribe Mattson Tomlin was working on it as a series before Warners announced it as a film at CinemaCon earlier this year.
Martin has previously dubbed it a “massive Dune-sized feature film for theaters”.
