The numbers are now coming in and, as expected, the return of the “Scary Movie” franchise has beaten the return of He-Man at the box-office.
Paramount-Miramax’s new “Scary Movie” is on track to take in $52.7 million at the box-office this weekend, following a first Friday and previews of $23.5 million. That’s a franchise record opening for the film, even as reviews were pretty scathing for the title, with just a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Meanwhile, those worried about “Masters of the Universe” having a soft opening were right to be concerned. The film is headed for a $31.3 million debut following a Friday and previews haul of $12.1 million. While critics reviews run softly positive, audience review scores have been higher.
Coming in third will be the second weekend of “Backrooms” which landed $8.5 million on Friday and is headed for a $26.5 million three-day haul. That’s a fairly steep drop of 67% from its debut. End of Sunday, it will hit a total of $135.6 million domestically.
The continuous climb of Curry Barker’s horror romance “Obsession” appears to have reached its apex, the film’s fourth weekend haul looking to come in at $24.8 million – a very slight drop of 9% after an incredible three weekends of straight climbs. By end of Sunday, it’ll be at $151.3 million domestically.
Fathom Entertainment’s “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” will be fifth with $20.8 million after topping the box-office on Thursday. That will mark a record opening for Fathom and above pre-release expectations.
