Netflix Plans Multiple “Catan” Projects

Asmodee, Dovetail Games

Netflix has reportedly scored the rights for a screen adaptation of the hit Asmodee resource-management strategy board game franchise “Catan”.

THR reports that the streaming giant is planning multiple TV and film projects – scripted and unscripted, live-action and animated – all based on the property.

The projects will be “set in a place where settlers must navigate bountiful and varied landscapes, shifting alliances and limited resources, while robbers roam the land.”

Originally released in Germany in 1995 as “The Settlers of Catan,” the game is set on a fictional island where players must scramble for resources. It has sold more than 45 million copies globally and is often cited as a gateway to modern board gaming.

At the same time, the game has hit minor controversy as well for its pro-colonialism themes.

The new deal joins a number of board game-to-screen adaptations in the works at the streamer, including a “Monopoly” reality series and work based on “Exploding Kittens”.
