An August 6th 2027 release date has been handed out for “Top Gun: Maverick,” “F1” and “TRON: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski’s new “Miami Vice” movie at Universal Pictures.
Michael Mann produced the original five-season 1980s TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich. It followed two detectives, Crockett and Tubbs, working undercover in Miami in the 1980s.
The show was famous for its pastel suits, contemporary music and filmmaking style which broke the form of most TV series of the type. Mann then directed a film remake in 2006, turning it into a gritty cop thriller starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Dan Gilroy (“Andor,” “Nightcrawler”) is writing the script for the new version while Dylan Clark (“The Batman”) is producing. A brief new synopsis released with the news confirms this will be a period piece that will “explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami”.
In addition, it is said the film will be “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking”.
Casting is currently underway and production will begin next year with the project to be shot in IMAX. Kosinski is coming off the success of “F1” which made over $600 million at the worldwide box-office and which Apple’s Tim Cook confirmed during the Emmys red carpet the other night that a sequel is in the works.
