Sophie Turner Officially Set As Lara Croft

HBO

She’s been linked for a while, but now it’s official – 29-year-old former “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner has been confirmed as the new Lara Croft in the upcoming “Tomb Raider” TV series at Amazon Prime Video.

Turner reportedly beat out actresses such as Mackenzie Davis, Emma Mackey and Lucy Boynton for the role and says in a statement: “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.”

Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have both previously played the character on film whereas actresses such as Keeley Hawes and Hayley Atwell have voiced her in projects.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the show’s creator, writer and co-showrunner and says in a statement: “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out — Croft is coming.”

Word of the series first broke in January 2023, and in April this year, reports spread like wildfire that the project had been cancelled – reports subsequently shot down. Chad Hodge is co-showrunning the series which starts production in January.

The series is expected to involve Lara Croft as an already established adventurer and archaeologist, have a 1990s vibe and is aiming for a tone akin to 1999’s “The Mummy”.
