Reeves Deep Into Writing “The Batman” Sequel

Warners Not Planning Batman Move Yet

Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that he’s currently still working on the script for a sequel to last year’s “The Batman”.

Reeves’ film impressed critics and took in over $770 million worldwide, which quickly led Warner Bros. Pictures to confirm the development of a sequel and a spinoff series focusing on Colin Farrell’s The Penguin character.

That film was separate from the DC Extended Universe properties and thus had no crossover with Ben Affleck’s Batman or any of the other heroes from the Zack Snyder era.

Appearing at a 15th-anniversary screening of found footage “Cloverfield” which he also directed, Reeves was asked by Collider if he was shooting any films this year. After first playing coy, Reeves then said:

” I’m not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I’ll put it to you that way. We’re deep in it, and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it’s really exciting, and I’m really excited about what we’re doing.”

Tomlin, of course, worked with Reeves on the script for “The Batman”. Reeves says that he’s “really excited to be doing that with Rob [Pattinson], because I just think he’s such a special person and actor.”

He also adds that HBO Max’s “The Penguin” series, which begins shooting next month, will tie into the upcoming sequel:

“There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with ‘The Penguin’ and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel.”

There’s no release window as yet for “The Batman” sequel, but the upcoming reveal of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe plans aren’t expected to have any impact on Reeves’ work on this.
