Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” has not only proven a box-office smash, but it’s doing the kind of repeat business even Marvel would envy.
The Tom Cruise-led legacy sequel has become the third Hollywood movie of the pandemic era to cross the $900 million mark at the global box office – just behind the $950 million “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” which it’s certain to pass, and the $1.9 billion worldwide of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” which it likely won’t.
Interestingly, the studio itself is now reporting that more than 16% of the film’s audience has seen it more than once in cinemas, and 4% have seen it at least four times.
The film has easily become Cruise’s biggest earner of all time, and has also become Paramount’s biggest live-action movie in 15 markets – including the U.K., Australia, France and Brazil.
The big question now is – will Paramount delay its SVOD release? The studio has stuck fairly consistently to a 45-46 day delay between a film’s theatrical opening and its release on Paramount+ and PVOD platforms – such as with “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”.
By that calculation, “Top Gun: Maverick” should be flying into homes on or around Tuesday, July 12th. However, the studio has not set a digital release date as yet and could push back the digital launch as the cinema release is still going strong.
