The BBC is reportedly teaming with production company Rise Films (“Icarus,” “The Invisible War”) for the previously announced event drama series “Thank You & Goodbye” about the News Of The World phone-hacking scandal that rocked the Murdoch media empire.
“The Salisbury Poisonings” team of director Saul Dibb and writers Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson are onboard with U.S. buyers said to be circling the project which is currently in a state of advanced development.
The story examines the newsroom of the British tabloid that was forced to close due to the scandal, and how journalists hacked the private messages and voicemails of various celebrities.
The fallout led to a highly-publicized public inquiry that sparked 100 arrests and saw Rupert Murdoch himself questioned by British lawmakers. The title refers to the headline of the final edition before Murdoch shut down the paper.
Rise has reportedly gained access to journalists, private investigators and perpetrators that were involved for the show, which started life as a documentary before becoming a scripted series.
