When the full trailer for “Thor: Love and Thunder” was released a month ago, there came a surprise – a scene in Olympus where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds his outfit ‘flicked’ away by Zeus (Russell Crowe).
The scene became the most paused/replayed moment in the clip according to YouTube. Now the film’s director Taika Waititi has spoken with ComicBook.com and confirmed the whole sequence has been a part of the film since early on in its development:
“We all knew we wanted to do it from very early on. That was in the first draft of the script actually and Chris was on board as well. I think you have a body like Chris, like, even he understands. It would just be a waste to not show it off.”
Waititi went on to joke that to not have the scene “would be a crime against humanity… you have to provide for the masses.” The inclusion has pushed the film’s MPAA rating to a place the MCU hasn’t gone before with its PG-13 classification being due to “intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, language, some suggestive material, and partial nudity.”
The comments come as the film’s runtime has been confirmed to clock in at 119 minutes – making it the shortest MCU entry since 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp”.
The film finds Thor on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.
To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.
Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Chris Pratt, Matt Damon, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Melissa McCarthy, Jaimie Alexander and Russell Crowe co-star in the film which opens July 8th.
