The organisers of this year’s Oscars ceremony have made a number of questionable decisions in recent weeks. One is the short-changing of eight key categories which has led to widespread blowback from the industry itself.
The other is the infamous #FanFavorite award which is being voted on Twitter and on the Academy’s website, though reaction to that seems less that of anger and more of morbid curiosity.
Things have now picked up steam as the Academy has announced the ten movies that have made the cut for the #OscarsFanFavorite Leaderboard and the results are mostly what you would expect from an online poll – a little strange.
The ten that made the cut are: “Army of the Dead,” “Cinderella,” “Dune,” “Malignant,” “Minamata,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Sing 2,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “The Suicide Squad” and “Tick, Tick…Boom!”.
With Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” ineligible, many of his supporters have seemingly turned towards supporting his Netflix original film “Army of the Dead”. Johnny Depp’s large fan base pumped up the actor’s little seen drama “Minamata,” while James Gunn & DC fans teamed to boost “The Suicide Squad”.
The inclusion of “Cinderella” is also being seen as due to a very organised online campaign, while James Wan’s “Malignant” has emerged as the ‘cool kids’ choice thanks as it is exactly the kind of film that doesn’t get awards but earns much love for its gonzo craziness.
Most of the other nominees were either box-office or streaming success stories and three of them are major award contenders. Intriguingly no Disney films made the cut.
Voting on the award closes on Thursday with the winner to be announced during the ceremony.
