Oscar-nominated Japanese road film “Drive My Car” has been acquired by WarnerMedia OneFifty and is set to premiere on HBO Max on March 2nd.
The universally praised film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in July before arriving in American theaters in late November. Its SVOD debut comes just weeks ahead of this year’s Oscars ceremony where it will compete for best picture – the first Japanese film to ever be nominated for that honor.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi helms the film about a widowed and aging theater actor and director (Hidetoshi Nishijima) who has seen his career damaged following his wife’s death.
Two years on, he is set to direct a production of Uncle Vanya but the theater company requires him to have a chauffeur who will be driving him around – a young and reserved woman (Tōko Miura). Over the course of the film, the pair develop a unique bond.
Masaki Okada, Reika Kirishima, Park Yoo-rim, Satoko Abe, Jin Dae-yeon, and Sonia Yuan co-star.
