With “Cobra Kai” moving from YouTube to Netflix, the show’s creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald have spoken with io9 about the shift and from the sounds of it they couldn’t be happier.
Hurwitz reveals that Netflix was extremely interested in the property when it was first offered and “were very aggressive at the time” to get it. The only reason YouTube ultimately got it was they guaranteed a full season of the show before a single word of the script had been written.
That made Netflix a natural home to pick up the series once YouTube opted to get out of scripted programming and began shedding its few pieces of original content. Schlossberg says they weren’t so much worried about landing a new platform for the third season because they were pretty confident it would land somewhere. The concern was where, and “we just wanted it to be at the best place, which is Netflix.”
Asked about the possibility of a fourth season, Hurwitz says they will “continue to make the show that we’ve been making. If there’s a little bit more money [from Netflix]? Great. We’ll put it on the screen and that would be awesome. But we’re not really concerned with that. I think the greatest element of Netflix for us simply is the ability for fans all over the world to have easy access to the show.”
The upcoming season will see Daniel LaRusso returning to Japan in order to continue to navigate through life without the mentorship of his Karate Kid sensei, Mr. Miyagi.
