Before Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures came to an agreement that saw the property rebooted a second time and become part of the MCU, Sony attempted to lay the groundwork for its own Spider-Man universe with the Andrew Garfield-led “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”.
The movie’s release yielded bad reviews and soft box-office compared to its predecessors, Marvel and Sony then brought Tom Holland on board to play Peter Parker and crossover with MCU the deal – bringing great success to both studios.
Originally though, one project that was to help Sony build their own universe was a proposed “Sinister Six” film. Actor Dane DeHaan, speaking with Collider this week, has confirmed that the project was indeed in development at one time and he was to reprise the role of Harry Osborn/Green Goblin in that film:
“I think it’s pretty obvious they were all setting up for like a Sinister Six kind of situation and there was certainly talk of doing all that before all the Disney, Marvel stuff happened. But I can’t tell you I know specifically what it was gonna be. I just know that there definitely would have been a Sinister Six element to it. And, you know, at least the Goblin, if not Harry Osborne would have been involved.”
Drew Goddard was originally attached to direct said “Sinister Six” film before it fell apart. Sony meanwhile has already begun having another go at building its own Marvel Universe” with the “Venom” films and the upcoming “Morbius”.
There’s also a third “Spider-Man” film with Tom Holland that is set to begin filming on July 13th assuming the global pandemic has settled down by then. Jon Watts, who directed the previous two installments, is set to return. Closing off Spidey talk for the day, a video has surfaced of Willem Dafoe on the set of “Spider-Man 2” in which he tries out Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octopus tentacles. Check that out below:
