The “Stargate” Film Reboot Has Stalled

Following their reunion on this year’s sequel to their 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day,” it was hoped that director/producer Roland Emmerich and writer/producer Dean Devlin would soon get to work on a follow-up to their other iconic hit – “Stargate”.

Though the 1994 Kurt Russell and James Spader-led sci-fi feature was a relatively modest success with $196.5 million worldwide, it went on to serve as the basis for one of TV’s biggest sci-fi franchises with three spin-off series which delivered a cumulative 334 episodes and two telemovies.

Emmerich and Devlin were famously not involved (and unhappy) with the TV spin-offs and so intended to correct things with a reboot trilogy that they would get to work on once “Independence Day Resurgence” was done. That’s no longer the case though.

Speaking with Empire recently Devlin says that though the project was looking promising for quite some time, it is no longer happening:

“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart. It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently.

Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back.

You’d have several studios involved and a lot of voices and, you know, you may make something great, but you also may have something that doesn’t resemble what you wanted to do. That kind of ‘collaboration’ is a terrifying aspect of the whole thing.”

At last report ‘Resurgence’ scribes Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods penned the script which was a full reboot rather than a sequel. However the disappointing $389.6 million worldwide box-office from that costly $165 million film is rumored to have given Fox pause at the idea of either a third ID4 or more “Stargate”.
