“The Odyssey” Gets Its Rating, Format Videos

Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures has released six clips with the stars of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” talking about the various formats with which the film is being shown theatrically.

Matt Damon gets the top choice with IMAX 70mm 15-perf film, followed by Anne Hathaway, touting more regular IMAX. Next is Lupita N’yongo touting regular 70mm film, Zendaya with Dolby Cinema, and Tom Holland with ‘Premium Large Format’ (ie. 4DX, Screen X). Poor Robert Pattinson gets stuck with regular old 35mm film.

The clips come as IMAX tickets for the title have gone on sale today with demand so high that wait times of up to an hour have been reported, while AMC’s ticketing app paused briefly due to high demand says Variety.

At the same time, the film has seemingly been officially rated R by the MPA with the rating and previously confirmed 172 minute runtime displayed on the TCL Chinese Theaters page. According to Variety, it’s not clear yet why it got that rating.

The rating is fitting with the story which features not just brutal battles but Odysseus having sex with multiple women, people being killed by creatures and some dark adult themes.

Boasting a $250 million budget, this would potentially surpass the $210 million net budget of “Gladiator II” as the most expensive R-rated movie ever.

Also revealed today is the film’s popcorn bucket, which is shaped like an IMAX camera. “The Odyssey” is set to hit cinemas on July 17th.
