This weekend sees the release of the Justin Lin-directed “Star Trek Beyond,” but even before it hits Paramount Pictures revealed it’s moving forward fast on a fourth film in the series with much of the key cast returning.
Sadly one crew member who won’t be back is the late Anton Yelchin following the young actor’s recent tragic death. In the wake of the news, one grim question does need to be asked – how will the series deal with Yelchin’s character Chekov going forward?
Producer J.J. Abrams tells Postmedia Network that the filmmakers are still weighing their options as it’s ‘too early’ to make a decision as yet. One thing they definitely won’t be doing though is recasting the role: “I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”
Another possibility of course is killing off the character: “I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it” says Abrams. Yelchin himself completed several other films after ‘Beyond’ and before his passing. Those are expected to be released in coming months.
