Sylvester Stallone has replaced Robert De Niro in “Idol’s Eye,” the next film of “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Carlos” director Oliver Assayas.
Inspired by actual events, the story follows a petty thief who accidentally steals a blue diamond belonging to Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo, leading to a battle between the duo just as the FBI closes in.
Assayas was originally slated to shoot the project in 2014 but financing was pulled at the last minute before production began. At the time De Niro, Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz were attached to star. In September, Assayas teased the project could be coming together again and now it looks like it has albeit with one casting change.
Pattinson and Weisz remain onboard the film which begins shoot in February in Toronto with a $25 million budget. De Niro’s departure is likely due to his commitment to Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” which is tipped to begin filming around that time.
