Peter Jackson’s “Mortal Engines” Set For 2018

Universal and MRC have announced today that the film adaptation of Philip Reeve’s award-winning book series “Mortal Engines” has set a December 14th 2018 release date.

The key trio behind “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies – Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens – will all produce and pen the project which Christian Rivers will direct and which Universal is the worldwide distributor on.

The four-book series is set several millennia in the future Earth’s cities now roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle for ever diminishing resources.

On one of these massive Traction Cities, Tom Natsworthy has an unexpected encounter with a mysterious young woman from the Outlands who will change the course of his life forever.

Zane Weiner, Amanda Walker and Deborah Forte are also producing. This marks only the third film Jackson and Walsh have produced for another filmmaker – the other two being “District 9” and “The Adventures of Tintin”. Production is slated to begin in New Zealand in Spring 2017.
