While many cinematic universes being built these days are planned well in advance, some are a bit more spur of the moment. M. Night Shyamalan surprised people with “Split” when an end credits scene revealed that the film is set in the same universe as the filmmaker’s “Unbreakable” movie.
Now there’s talk of another crossover of franchises, this time two recent horror titles – “Insidious” and “Sinister”. Both film series belong to Blumhouse Productions and whilst out doing an interview to promote “Insidious: The Last Key,” the fourth film in that particular series, producer Jason Blum was asked about a potential crossover.
Surprisingly he revealed the idea was something that had already been under consideration and could still happen. He tells CinePop:
“I hope so. I want to. We almost did Insidious and Sinister and I still feel like we might do that so, I think so. I think we’re going to cross our worlds at some point. I don’t know how yet but we’re gonna try.”
Both franchises kicked off with strong entries that scored well with critics and earned big box-office from small budgets. Their follow-ups haven’t been nearly as good creatively, but the six films of both franchises so far have earned a combined total of $554 million worldwide.
