Filmmaker Woody Allen says he’s no longer much interested in making movies, putting the reasoning on the rise of streaming and the death of movie houses.
Speaking with Alec Baldwin during an appearance on Instagram Live on Tuesday to promote his humorous story collection “Zero Gravity,” he says the enjoyment is gone and after his next film – his fiftieth as director, he may be done:
“I’ll probably make at least one more movie. A lot of the thrill is gone. When I used to do a film it’d go into a movie house all across the country. Now you do a movie and you get a couple of weeks in a movie house. Maybe six weeks or four weeks and then it goes right to streaming or pay-per-view…It’s not the same…It’s not as enjoyable to me.
I don’t get the same fun as putting on a movie and putting it in a theater. It was a nice feeling to know that 500 people were seeing it once… I don’t know how I feel about making movies. I’m going to make another one and I’ll see how it feels.”
Allen, coming off the just-released “Rifkin’s Festival,” confirmed he will make another movie in Paris in the Fall but didn’t offer any details.
The once-celebrated filmmaker has become a pariah in Hollywood in recent years as sexual abuse allegations involving his daughter Dylan Farrow resurfaced.
Amazon Studios notably cancelled a $68 million four-film deal, and Allen’s recent movies have struggled to gain distribution.
