Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, already convicted of rape and currently on trial for sexual assault crimes, has somehow found time to react to the opening weekend box-office performance of the new feature “She Said” reports Variety.
That film, which follows the reporters who helped break the scandal that led to Weinstein’s downfall and ignited the #MeToo movement, scored very good reviews and had been generating awards buzz.
However it opened on Friday last week and pulled in a dismal $2.2 million over three days – one of the worst wide-release openings for a major studio film to date and not promising for a $30 million-budgeted feature.
On Monday this week, Weinstein’s spokesperson Juda Engelmayer reached out to Variety to issue a statement on Weinstein’s behalf:
“The film ‘She Said’ bombing isn’t a surprise. Movie watchers want to be entertained, especially now. Details of the investigation, the #MeToo movement, the story of Weinstein and the accusers, has been told over and over again these past five years and it is clear that there was little worth paying to see it here. Harvey, the film producer and distributor, would have known that.”
The statement makes no mention of Weinstein’s ongoing criminal trial. “She Said” is based on the book of the same name by the two reporters who broke the Weinstein story. In addition, real-life survivors of Weinstein contributed to the film.
