Jacob Tremblay (“Room,” “Wonder”) and Awkwafina (“Ocean’s 8,” “Crazy Rich Asians”) are in talks to join Disney’s live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid”.
Rob Marshall is helming the project based on the famed Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of a mermaid named Ariel who yearns to be human after she falls in love with a prince and makes a deal with sea witch Ursula who grants her wish but takes her voice.
If they sign up, Tremblay would play the fish Flounder while Awkwafina would play the seagull Scuttle. Both characters are good friends of the red-headed princess and were played by Jason Marin and Buddy Hackett respectively in the original.
The other day came word that Melissa McCarthy is already in talks to play the villain Ursula. The new film is expected to showcase all the well-known songs and will also have new material.
Original composer Alan Menken is teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Menken composing and Miranda writing lyrics. Miranda, Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca are producing.
