Columbia Pictures is reportedly developing a reimagining of the cult 1997 horror film “Anaconda” and have hired Evan Daugherty (“Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Tomb Raider”) to pen the script.
The 1997 original followed a documentary film crew in the Amazon that comes across an obsessed Paraguayan hunter (Jon Voight) looking to find a legendary anaconda.
The hunter derails the expedition for his own purpose, with the filmmakers now forced to contend with a murderous madman and a giant snake that will squeeze the life out of them and swallow them whole.
Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Kari Wuhrer and Jonathan Hyde starred as the boat crew. No producer is attached to the new version at this stage with Sony said to be wanted to take a “The Meg”-style approach – taking a B-movie concept and will ‘eventize it’ with a much larger scope and budget.
The original launched a franchise, including one theatrical sequel and three direct-to-home releases, and has proven to be one of the most profitable titles in Sony’s library.
