Tom Welling is set to return to The CW with the former “Smallville” leading man announced as joining the cast of the “Supernatural” prequel spin-off “The Winchesters”.
Welling will play a younger version of family patriarch Samuel Campbell, a role originally played by “X-Files” alum Mitch Pileggi in “Supernatural”. He is Mary Campbell’s father, and Dean and Sam’s maternal grandfather.
In the new series, Samuel taught Mary everything he knows. Gruff and pragmatic, he’s a veteran Hunter who prefers actions over words.
When he teams up with Mary and her friends to save the world, he won’t only have to defeat the most dangerous monster he’s ever faced – he’ll also have to mend his broken relationship with his daughter.
“Supernatural” alum Jensen Ackles co-starred with “Welling” across a full season of “Smallville” and the pair reunite here. Welling will make his debut in the seventh episode.
“The Winchesters” will have its debut on Tuesday on The CW.
